Recognize, Reject and Report Fraud” say OPP

The Killaloe Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is reminding community residents to remain vigilant, and be aware of email and telephone scams.

Phishing is any email falsely claiming to be from an established legitimate organization such as a financial institution, business, or government agency. This email may request or direct the person to visit a certain website to update or provide personal and/or financial information and passwords.

You may also receive a telephone call from a person pretending to be someone from a government agency, such as the police, who then ask you for personal information including Social Insurance Numbers (SIN) and banking information. The police will not ask for this type of information over the telephone. Please verify the legitimacy of any caller before providing personal information, or hang up.

If you or someone you know suspect they have been a victim of a scam or fraud, please contact your local police service or the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre. You can also call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS) or report the incident online at https://www.tipsubmit.com/start.htm
