More free public skating during March Break

Renfrew County District School Board (RCDSB) is sponsoring free public skates in many Renfrew County communities during March Break including on Monday, Mar.13 in Barry’s Bay (Paul J. Yakabuski Arena) from 1:30 pm to 3:00 pm and on Wednesday, Mar.15 in Palmer Rapids (Palmer Rapids Arena) from 1pm to 3pm. RCDSB welcomes everyone to any of these skate sessions:  

  • Tuesday, Mar.14 at Petawawa (Civic Centre) from 1pm to 3pm
  • Tuesday, Mar.14 at Cobden (Astrolabe Arena) from 1:00pm to 2:00pm
  • Wednesday, Mar.15 at Eganville (EDCC) from 1:00pm to 2:00pm
  • Wednesday, Mar.15 at Palmer Rapids (Palmer Rapids Arena) from 1pm to 3pm
  • Thursday, Mar.16 at Pembroke (PMC) from 1:30pm to 3:00pm Thursday, Mar.16 at Renfrew (Ma-te-Way Activity Centre) from 2:30pm to 3:30pm

Indigenous Speaker Series

The RCDSB Indigenous Education Team hosts the 2023 Indigenous Speaker Series. In the spirit of reciprocal relationships, RCDSB invites community members, partner agencies, and families to these FREE virtual events hosted in the evening. It is an opportunity to hear from role models, and to build intercultural understanding.

Christy Jordan-Fenton: Tuesday. Mar.21 from 7:00pm to 8:30pm. Christy Jordan-Fenton, a lifelong outdoor enthusiast, is best known for the books she co-authored with her mother-in-law, Margaret-Olemaun Pokiak-Fenton, an Inuvialuit knowledge keeper and residential school survivor. Their books, Fatty Legs: A True Story, When I Was Eight and Not My Girl recount the life of Margaret-Olemaun Pokiak-Fenton who passed away in June of 2021.’ (Courtesy of Amazon and Goodminds).

Three Nolans: Thursday, Mar.30 from 7:00pm to 8:30pm. Three Nolans is made up of Ted Nolan, Brandon Nolan, and Jordan Nolan. This father-sons trio have all had robust hockey careers with many achievements at all levels. Ted both played and coached in the NHL. Brandon played in the NHL and graduated in 2012 as the highest ranking graduate in the entire Business Administration program. Jordan Nolan is a two-time Stanley Cup Champion with the LA Kings and is looked upon as a positive role model in First Nation communities across Canada. He was also the Ambassador for Nike N7 in 2017. Three Nolans have a successful apparel line called 3N and together they run a skills-based hockey development school for First Nations youth.

OPP Fraud & Scam Awareness Presentation

The Upper Ottawa Valley (UOV) Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), in partnership with the Pembroke Public Library, is hosting a presentation plus a question-and-answer period on fraud and scam awareness. The presentation will cover mass marketing fraud, romance and emergency scams, and other prevalent scams – and how to avoid them.

The presentation will take place from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. on March 25, 2023, at the Pembroke Public Library at 237 Victoria Street in Pembroke. Those interested in attending are asked to register by calling the library at 613-732-8844 or by emailing programs@pembrokelibrary.ca

Runners save the date

The second annual Heroes Run for Healthcare will take place in downtown Pembroke on May 2. Event organizers, Pembroke Regional Hospital Foundation, offer two distances for this run: a timed 5 km community run and a 2 km Kids’ Heroes run (all Super Heroes welcome). The runs are sponsored by Canadian Nuclear Laboratories and Mike’s Hardware, with proceeds to support the Cancer Care Campaign which will fund the expansion and upgrades needed to the Chemotherapy and Medical Daycare unit at Pembroke Regional Hospital.

Registration is now open: Pricing is $30/person for the 5 km timed run and $10/child for the 2 km hero themed fun run. A special group rate for schools, youthorganizations, corporate groups and sports teams of $150 is available for the 5K run.
