Animal Complaints: As temperatures rise, the Renfrew OPP are reminding the public to leave your pets at home if you can’t take them inside with you. Officers responded to four incidents where pets were left in vehicles on hot days and owners were spoken to by police.
On a day where the temperature is 26 degrees Celsius, the temperature inside a vehicle parked in the shade reaches 32 degrees Celsius. If you leave your motor vehicle in the sun the temperature can reach 71 degrees Celsius. This is extremely hot and can have devastating effects on your pet.
Dogs and cats pant to cool themselves, but this is ineffective when they are surrounded by heat. On summer days the air and upholstery in your vehicle can heat up to high temperatures that make it impossible for pets to cool themselves. Your pet will be more comfortable if left at home.
A domesticated pet is dependent on the owner for proper care such as food, shelter and water. The Criminal Code of Canada has specific sections that deal with the mistreatment of animals.
- Cause unnecessary suffering
- Injure or endanger an animal
- Neglect an animal

Marine: Over the weekend, the Renfrew OPP Marine Unit was busy patrolling the waterways and would like to remind boaters the provincial laws regarding alcohol on boats do not permit any open alcohol to be available or consumed by anyone onboard the boat while it is underway. There were seven provincial offence notices issued for having liquor in an open container in other than licensed premises, residence or private place. Only boats which have sleeping, washroom and cooking facilities integrated into their design may legally have open alcohol on-board but only when the boat is being used as a residence (at, anchored or tied to a dock).
Officers also issued two offence notices for operating a pleasure craft without personal floatation device or life jacket of appropriate size for each person aboard. Another offence notice was issued for not having the prescribed vessel safety equipment. Both of these charges are found under the Small Vessel Regulations.
