Meslin speaks about grassroots democracy

Dave Meslin, author of Teardown Rebuilding Democracy from the Group Up, will speak at the Killaloe-Hagarty-Richards Township building in Killaloe on Wednesday August 7 at 7 p.m. Teardown is said to be “a handbook of democratic solutions in troubled times.” In a May 20 opinion piece for the Globe & Mail, Meslin wrote that populist anger “can be artfully used by political forces to further polarize and divide people or it can be delicately redirected toward something constructive: a daring revolution against our broken democratic system.” Childcare will be provided. The book talk is sponsored by Morninglory Farm.

OPP reminder: Lock it or lose it

OPP Killaloe Detachment responded to a number of thefts in the Valley during the last week of July. Personal items such as wallets, purses, fishing tackle, and sports equipment were reported stolen. Police remind the community to “Lock it Or Lose It.” Keep personal items with you. Lock your vehicle, pocket the keys, and never leave items visible to thieves. Madawaska Valley Public Library Trivia Night

Attention trivia addicts: It’s time to register your team for the annual MV Public Library Trivia night to take place at the Barry’s Bay Legion Branch 406 on Wednesday August 14 at 7 p.m. $120 per team, maximum six people per team, spectator fee $5. Here’s your chance to show off in a truly trivial way! (and raise money for the library)

While thinking about library matters …

The Week UK reported on August 1 that “a rare first edition of J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone has sold at auction in Staffordshire for £28,500.” The reports says the book was sold by an office worker who snapped it up for £1 at a table-top sale some 20 years ago. It sold despite being an ex-library copy – generally something that lowers the value of a first edition – stamped with “withdrawn from stock” in red ink on the inside.

There are great bargains to be had at the Used Book Sale in the basement of the MV Public Library in Barry’s Bay. We’re not promising any rare finds, but who knows?

Golf/Hockey and Valley heritage

Valley golfers can participate in the Kashubian Flagstick Golf Tournament at The Homestead at Wolf Ridge on Sunday August 18 (Kashubian Flag Day). The $70 fee per person includes 9 holes, cart and a Kashubian chicken supper. This is the first fundraising event to help the Kashubian Women’s Griffins hockey team finance their trip to play hockey in Europe.
