Editor’s Note: Candidate for Madawaska Valley Council, David Shulist, replied to The Current today with apologies for having missed our deadline saying that he has been very busy. Below is the statement he provided:
I am a Madawaska Valley man with deep roots here, and I sincerely care about this wonderful township and the people who call it home.
My commitment to our community has always been about giving back and helping wherever I can. Over the years, I have been involved in coordinating charity events, serve as an active member of the Knights of Columbus and the Barry’s Bay Legion, was the founding president of the Wilno Heritage Society and I am the founding Commissioner of the Opeongo Heritage Cup. I also volunteer with the hospice program at St. Francis Memorial Hospital, supporting individuals and families in our community during difficult times.
I have had the privilege of serving our municipality for 12 years — six years as Mayor and six years as Councilor. This experience has given me a strong understanding of municipal government, local issues, and the responsibilities that come with serving our residents. I am and always have been ready to serve.
I bring to the table experience, knowledge, and a genuine understanding of our community. Most importantly, I bring a sincere desire to continue working for the people of the Madawaska Valley and to help protect and strengthen the communities we are so fortunate to call home – whether they are from Barry’s Bay, Comberemere, Wilno, Hopefield or Halfway, whether they are permanent or seasonal – their needs and expectations are important to me.
If elected, I hope to continue advocating for affordable senior housing and housing opportunities in general, while also addressing the challenges that come with continued growth in our community.One of those challenges is our landfill, where new growth is placing increasing pressure on the remaining lifespan of our landfill site. We need to continue looking for responsible, long-term solutions that protect both our environment and our community.
It is important to listen to and seek advice from the many businesses in our Township, as well as from the volunteer associations that are the lifeblood of the Madawaska Valley. Their experience, dedication, and connection to our community provide valuable insight that should help guide the Township’s decisions and priorities.
I would also like to encourage the new Council to build a stronger bridge between all of our Cottage Associations. Their voices and concerns are important, particularly when it comes to the water quality of our lakes. By working together and listening to those who know our lakes best, we can make better-informed decisions and protect them for generations to come.
I want to preserve the spirit, history, and traditions that make our community special while working toward a responsible path for future growth.
I believe that we can honour where we come from without standing still. By remembering our past, listening to our community, and embracing the future, we can build a community that respects its roots while creating new opportunities for generations to come.
