Various national and international news sources including CBC, New York Times and The Guardian reported earlier today that President Obama has endorsed Justin Trudeau for re-election. Obama tweeted, “The world needs his progressive leadership now, and I hope our neighbors to the north support him for another term.”

Obama’s tweet today has prompted a deluge of opposing opinions including references to meddling in a foreign power’s election, Trudeau’s recently exposed “blackface” incidents, and more. Some media sources compared the tweet with endorsements that Conservative leader Andrew Scheer has received to date, while others point out that Obama has not endorsed his former Vice-President Joe Biden.
