Onion give-away

Just in from the Madawaska Valley Gardening Club:
A local gardener donated onion sets (starters) to the Madawaska Valley Food Bank this week, and she had extras. So in support of the MV Gardening Club’s program to encourage new vegetable gardeners, she’s donating them to anyone in the area who would like to grow free onions.

Our pop-up onion give-away is located on the outside window ledges of Moose-FM, 41 Bay St, Barrys Bay. You can take one bag, which has about 60 Dutch Onion sets. We’ll give out about 25 bags, so hurry by this week, as now’s the time to plant.
You simply plant them, pointy-side up, 1′ below ground and 4″ apart, in rows a foot apart. You can either snip off the stalks to eat as green onions in June/July, or let them grow into full bulbs to eat in August/September or store over-winter.
Remember, you can ask MV Gardening Club experts any gardening questions in the Comments section below, or by calling Moose FM at 756-1881.
