Killaloe Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are urging the community to be on the look-out for Prize and Lottery scams.
On Thursday, October 1, 2020, Killaloe OPP commenced an investigation into a Publisher’s Clearing House Sweepstakes scam, which occurred in the Township of Bonnechere Valley.
Contact with the victim was made through email and telephone. The victim was instructed to send cash through money transfers prior to collecting the prize. In this case, the victim reported sending a large sum of money over several months, never receiving the prize.
In Canada, it is illegal for a lottery organization to charge a fee prior to collecting the prize and lottery winnings are tax free. The Renfrew County OPP Crime Unit is continuing to investigate this incident and urges anyone who believes they have been a victim to contact police.
If you think you or someone you know has been a victim of fraud, please contact the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501 or online at www.antifraudcentre.ca. If you would like to remain anonymous please call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.
