St Francis Memorial Hospital continues Best Practice Guidelines collaboration with RN organization

St. Francis Memorial Hospital joined the Registered Nursing Association of Ontario (RNAO) in a collaborative partnership to become a predesignate hospital under the Best Practice Spotlight Organization (BPSO) initiative. This 3-year journey will assist SFMH in implementing research-driven Best Practice Guidelines to guide our patient care interventions. The Best Practice Guidelines (BPGs) are created by the RNAO using the most up-to-date healthcare and nursing research, and by implementing these guidelines, we ensure that we are providing the best possible patient care through our staff.

In June of 2024 SFMH began implementing the first BPG, Transitions in Care. Transitions in Care happen frequently during any patient-healthcare worker episode of care. An example of this is the transition a patient may make from being seen in the Emergency Department to then being admitted to the Inpatient Unit. The information that is exchanged between the members of the ED team and the Inpatient Unit staff is a “transition in care. Over the course of the past year, SFMH has implemented this BPG which has allowed the team to continue to provide exemplary patient care by improving transitions in care. Work will continue to sustain these practices through our Champions and an ongoing analysis of performance on various indicators related to this BPG.

On July 3, 2025, SFMH launched the second BPG, Delirium, Dementia and Depression in Older Adults. The BPSO Leads and Champions took part in a “Fun in the Sun” celebration with all staff to promote the launch and spread the word on the work that has and will continue to take place on the BPSO journey. Delirium, Dementia and Depression are conditions that can have many symptoms in common, so by implementing this BPG, the healthcare team at SFMH can better understand and determine the best treatment for the patient. Quick and accurate assessments can increase the success of recovery.
