The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 406 Barry’s Bay needs your help. Legion Branch 406 is facing possible closure due to the fact that the President has resigned due to health issues. The 1st and 2nd Vice-Presidents are unable to step up. The Past President is now Zone Commander and cannot fill the position of President due to conflict of interest rules.
What Legion Branch 406 does for you
With more than 300 members in the region, Legion Branch 406 supports Veterans and their families, as well as many community and youth groups. Branch 406 Past President and Legion Zone Commander Heather Poliquin, told The Current, “We offer our front hall free to other not for profit organizations and we regularly rent it out for parties, showers, vaccination clinics, plus group and business functions such as Christmas Parties and town halls.” An excellent case in point is last evening’s very well-attended All Candidates Meeting for the municipal election.
Branch 406 does much more than just an annual Remembrance Day ceremony in Barry’s Bay. It also provides support to Whitney and Madawaska with their Remembrance Day ceremonies and regularly offers events that cater for all ages in the community. Poliquin explains, “We provide regular community events such as our weekly bingo, weekly cards, Canada Day Celebrations, Pancake Breakfasts, New Year’s Eve Parties. We also sponsor the annual Literary, Poster, and Video contests.”
Role of the Legion President
The position of Legion President is a working role – not just a titled position. It offers a willing individual the very real chance to make a major contribution to our community. You can readily see from the activities listed above the very significant part that Legion Branch 406 plays in the Valley. Poliquin said, “Hopefully someone willing to learn the Legion Policies and Procedures will step up. If anyone is interested please contact the Branch and we will send the expectations of the Position.” The consequences of having no Legion President are dire – without a President, Ontario Command will initiate a Board of Trustees to handle the closing of Legion Branch 406.
