Cheryl Reid, President of the Opeongo Snowbirds Snowmobile Club, attended the recent Recreation Heritage and Culture Committee meeting seeking use of the Barry’s Bay Railway Station for a vintage snowmobile show. Madawaska Valley agreed the Club could host the event there from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Mar. 10. The Fire Department will have a bonfire and BarBQ for the public.

The Station is closed this winter but the sledding community is determined not to lose the momentum from a popular event that township staff launched there in 2017. Last year’s vintage sled show attracted 300 people who went into the building and over 35 sleds were on display. Club members monitored snowmobile trips through the area that day, which tallied about three thousand.

The 2017 event was held in February. Reid said this year’s initiative by the Opeongo Snowbirds helps support local businesses later in the winter when snow on the trails can be unreliable. She pointed out that snow is unnecessary for vintage sleds as they get trailered in.

The Opeongo Snowbirds Snowmobile Club is running this year’s event as a fundraiser. The Club invites people to bring their old sleds for a registration fee of $5. Visitors can take part in a swap and sale. The Club is also looking for vendors to set up a table.
