OPP warns of local election funds scam

The Current has just received the following warning from Bancroft Detachment OPP:

Bancroft OPP warns residents of an ongoing fraud that has been taking place in and around the Bancroft Detachment area regarding the upcoming election.

Fraudulent e-mails have been sent to individuals and members of municipalities asking to initiate e-transfers, or money orders to support certain candidates that are running in the election. Suspect(s) have been sending e-mails out asking that money be sent to them in order to fraudulently steal individuals’ money.

The OPP advises residents to do some research before sending, and or receiving e-mails when it comes to financial transactions. Never give out personal or banking information through and unknown e-mail or over the phone.

If you receive an e-mail from someone you know, contact them to verify that it’s correct.

Anyone with information about these frauds are asked to please contact the Bancroft OPP at 1-888-310-1122, report it to the OPP online at http://www.opp.ca/index.php?id=132, by cellphone (*677 (*OPP)) or through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS) at https://www.tipsubmit.com/start.htm if you wish to remain anonymous.
