Madawaska Valley Horticultural Society members attended the October 18 meeting at the Opeongo Seniors Centre in Barry’s Bay to participate in their annual Seed Exchange and to view a film.
The highlight of the evening was to be the screening of The Gardener, an award-winning documentary directed by Montrealer Sebastien Chabot about horticulturist Frank Cabot’s beautiful Les Quatre Vents estate in Charlevoix, Quebec. His private 20-acre English-style garden is considered one of the largest and most beautiful private gardens in the world.
Despite working perfectly at a trial screening a few days earlier, the projection equipment malfunctioned. It appeared that the previous night’s power failure had somehow affected it. Several Society members retrieved equipment and assorted cables from their homes in an effort to correct the problem. While they did so, the audience traded gardening tips and took advantage of the Seed Exchange.

After nearly an hour it became apparent that the problem would not be resolved that evening. The audience of about forty chose to return to the Opeongo Seniors Centre for the screening the following week.
MV Horticultural Society members will be able to watch The Gardener on Thursday, October 25 at 7:30 p.m. Annual memberships available at the door for $10.
