Hello out there, we’re on the air, it’s Heritage Hockey time again.
The Opeongo Heritage Cup is back to entertain cultural hockey fans. Once again, the descendants of the first Irish, Kashub and German pioneers who travelled up the Opeongo Line in the 1850s to settle the Madawaska and Bonnechere Valleys will play for their ancestral homeland and culture. The Irish Shamrocks will play for the Irish nation of Ireland the homeland of their Irish ancestors, the Kashubian Griffins will play for the Kashubian nation of Kashubia the homeland of their Kashubian ancestors, and the German Black Eagles will play for the German nation of Germany the homeland of their German ancestors. They will be joined by the Algonquin nation who are native to our area and are one of Canada’s First Nations. The Algonquin Thunderbirds will play for their Algonquin nation of Pikwakanagan, the homeland of their Algonquin ancestors.
The tournament will be run by the Combermere Heritage Society, the Wilno Heritage Society, Killaloe Heritage Society and Zurakowski Park Committee. All proceeds will go to the four heritage groups where all money goes back into their individual heritage projects. Dates of tournament are Friday March 29, Saturday March 30 and Sunday March 31.
Proud to be Canadian and proud of our Cultural Roots – Hockey is Our Vehicle and Diversity is Our Fuel.
