Various organizations in Renfrew County will host events during the coming week to celebrate International Women’s Day. The Current lists a few worth adding to your diary:
Saturday Mar. 2 7:30 p.m. Celebrating Women concert
Pembroke Symphony Orchestra (PSO) conducted by Mehdi Javanfar
PSO performs a unique repertoire, showcasing compositions by seven women composers of various nationalities:
- Fanny Hensel Mendelssohn (German)
- Larysa Kuzmenko (Canadian)
- Cindy McTee (American)
- Lili Boulanger (French)
- Suad Bushnaq (Jordanian)
- Maya Badian (Canadian of Romanian origin)
- Adrienne Albert (American)
Ottawa-born piano virtuoso Christina Petrowska Quilico performs Kuzmenko’s Piano Concerto. The concert ends with “Courage,” conducted by Elena Semenets of Chalk River, Ontario. Albert’s bold composition has an optimistic outlook to finish this celebratory concert on a high note.

Monday Mar. 4 7 to 8:30 p.m. Dark Times Community Choir
While not specifically about Women’s Day, this community choir is fun and free. Channel your inner Gloria Gaynor, Aretha Franklin or favourite female singer! Everyone is welcome; no experience necessary. Join choirmaster Schroeder Nordholdt to sing for the fun of it on Monday evenings until March 25th.

Wednesday Mar. 6 6-8 p.m. Women’s Week – Judy Rebick talk
Feminist author Judy Rebick speaks about her life’s journey and highlighters her books Heroes in my Head and 10,000 Roses. Hosted by EVA-End Violence Against Women-Renfrew County and Pembroke Public Library

Friday Mar. 8 8 to 10 a.m. International Women’s Day Breakfast
Hosted by Women’s Sexual Assault Centre of Renfrew County. Attendees will have the opportunity to learn more about the Women of Renfrew County Showcase project.
