MV reviews flood watch at emergency Easter meeting

Easter celebrations were set aside as Madawaska Valley Council and staff met at short notice on Easter Sunday to review flood and road conditions in the region. Residents were urged to visit municipal511.ca for up-to-date road conditions before driving. Any residents who experience an emergency due to flooding should call the Township at 613.757.2747 for reference to the emergency line.

At the Special Council Meeting, Operations Manager Hilary Kutchkoskie and Operations Supervisor Mike Phillips confirmed that roads are being monitored and repaired as issues arise. Kutchkoskie requested Council approval to intervene quickly regarding the washout of Wilno North Road (photo above from MV Facebook). Council passed a resolution to acquire and install a temporary portable metal bridge to give access for residents.

Chief Fire Official / Emergency Management Corwin Quade reported on the flood watch throughout the region. He assured Council that staff in all municipalities were keeping a close eye on the situation and were maintaining good communication. Staff confirmed that the municipality is not experiencing issues as serious as those that arose during spring 2017. CAO Suzanne Klatt reminded staff of the records required should the municipality need to apply for relief as a result of any issues. She said based on last year’s budget, the Acting Treasurer estimated the municipality’s threshold would be $114,000. Mayor Kim Love and Klatt complimented staff on their work in monitoring and doing early temporary repairs. They said that staff is updating the municipal511.ca website and the Township’s Facebook page to keep citizens informed about any issues as they arise.

Deputy Clerk Gwen Dombroskie said the Township has an adequate supply of sand and sandbags. Council approved use of the same process as was used in 2017: in case of emergency the Operations Department can bring both sand and bags to areas where needed.

Dombroskie said the Province will update FRESHET calls daily this week and the next County update will be on Tuesday April 23.
