Girl Guides plant flower garden for seniors residence

On June 27 members of the 1st Barry’s Bay Sparks, Brownies Guides, Pathfinder, Ranger Unit helped to plant a community garden at the Barry’s Bay Supportive Housing senior residence on Stafford Street. Communities in Bloom co-chairs Debbie Marshall and Elser Lee Archer were on hand to assist the Unit’s leaders and the girls, under the watchful eyes of a group of residents. Pictured above with residents: Alexis Pecarski (front left); Guide leader Stephanie Plebon (seated middle row) holding Erika Strack, Jordyn Plebon, Ava Szczygiel, Madison Pecarski; Elser Lee Archer (standing left) and Debbie Marshall (third from right)

Despite the heat and blackflies, the job was completed quickly and efficiently with Archer and Marshall digging holes in advance so the girls could do the planting. Yuill’s ValuMart supported the Girl Guides’ efforts by contributing 18 bags of mulch. Residents of the seniors apartments said they were pleased to see a new flower garden planted just before they were due to hold their Canada Day barbecue. They said they looked forward to enjoying the colourful flowers all summer long.
