A.J. Casson’s Love Affair with Barry’s Bay
Though the Group of Seven are famous throughout the world as Canada’s premier landscape painters, few people know about the Group’s long love affair with Barry’s Bay and area landscape. The Station Keepers are launching a new exhibit on Friday July 19 to help correct that. Eighteen carefully researched and digitally crafted replicas of works by A. J. Casson will be on display this weekend at the Barry’s Bay Railway Station at 19503 Opeongo Line. Above: “Road to Yantha Lake” by A.J. Casson
“The exhibit is our way of reminding both local and tourist alike of the long and essential tradition in these parts when it comes to appreciating artists, whether they are some of our beloved locals or world-famous and long gone such as Mr. Casson,” said Joanne Olsen, chair of the Station Keepers. She said the exhibit is also a tip of the hat to the Madawaska Valley Studio Tour that also takes place this weekend.

Madawaska Valley Summer Studio Tour
Starting Friday July 19 art lovers throughout the Valley can soak up three full days of culture as they follow the award-winning Madawaska Valley Studio Tour. For the first time in its 28 year history, the annual Studio Tour has bowed to the inevitable by acknowledging Canadians’ early escape to the cottage on Fridays. Artists on both Summer and Fall tours will open their studios for an extra day this year, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
- Summer Studio Tour dates are July 19, 20, 21
- Fall Studio Tour dates are October 4, 5, 6
The consistently high quality of Valley arts and crafts on offer results from an annual jurying process. This year some guest artists return as new studio hosts, while some favourite studios from previous tours re-open. Here are some photos from the 2018 summer tour to whet your appetite.
