Yakabuski announces appointment of Special Advisor on Flooding

Minister of Natural Resources and Forestry John Yakabuski announced on July 18 that Doug McNeil has been appointed as Ontario’s Special Advisor on Flooding. He will advise the province on ways to reduce the impacts of flooding and ensure communities can recover quickly, according to the press release. Yakabuski said, “We heard from people across the province and saw firsthand the damage caused by flooding in so many communities. We want to help Ontarians protect what matters most and a special advisor will help better prepare our province for flooding in the future.”

McNeil has extensive government experience which includes 36 years in public service with the City of Winnipeg and Province of Manitoba. He recently retired as Chief Administrative Officer of the City of Winnipeg.

 

Natural Health Centre Open House raising funds for Valley Manor redevelopment 

The Natural Health Centre at 43 Dunn Street, Barry’s Bay will hold an Open House from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday July 27. The public can tour the newly renovated two-floor facility (accessible), meet the people who work there and learn about the unique services offered. Healthy food samples, coffee, de-alcoholized wine tasting, draws for gift certificates, 50/50 and more. Proceeds in aid of Valley Manor redevelopment.

 

Investigation into suspicious death of Barry’s Bay man continues

Now entering its sixth month, the investigation into the death of Barry’s Bay resident Sylvester Glysinskie has not yet concluded. The Current spoke to an OPP representative on Friday who confirmed that to be the case. A death is regarded as suspicious if it is unexpected and its circumstances or cause are medically or legally unexplained. Typically this occurs in the context of medical care, suicide or suspected criminal activity.

 

Catch The Ace in full swing

St. Francis Valley Healthcare Foundation has so far drawn two weekly winners in the second round of its Catch The Ace lottery. Week #1 winner was Phyllis Gienow who scooped up $1,134 and Pat Hogan won $1,188 in the Week #2 draw. Because of the progressive jackpot that continues to grow until the Ace of Spades is revealed, a $5 ticket can yield impressive results. The big winner in the first round of Catch The Ace received a cheque for more than $25,000. Week #3 tickets are now on sale for the next draw at 4 p.m. on Thursday July 25.
