Taste of the Valley comes to Barry’s Bay
The annual Taste of the Valley festival takes place at the Barry’s Bay Railway Station on Friday August 16 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. This is your chance to enjoy Valley produce, food, arts, crafts and more. Your favourite Barry’s Bay Farmers Market vendors will be joined on site by many others in the annual display and sale of the best the Valley has to offer. Remember to bring a cooler so you can take home some treats.
Catch The Ace progressive jackpot grows
Gord Draper was the lucky Week 5 winner of $1,301 last Thursday. The total progressive jackpot for the August 15 draw is estimated at more than $12,000 if the Ace of Spades is found. Catch The Ace lottery tickets cost $5 each and are available from the St. Francis Valley Healthcare Foundation and at vendors throughout the Valley. Lottery proceeds go towards Valley Manor Redevelopment.
Tools for Schools registration now open
Renfrew County Child Poverty Action Network (CPAN) has announced its Tools for Schools program is now open for registration. The program (formerly known as Backpack Plus) ensures all children can start their school year in dignity with a backpack, school supplies, and shoes regardless of their economic status. CPAN says 1000 to 1500 children in Renfrew County will need help this fall. They invite individuals, businesses and organizations to commit to sponsor one or more children annually at a cost of $75 per child – a small cost that makes a huge difference to a child in need. Pembroke breastfeeding drop-in continues
Renfrew County District Health Unit announces its breastfeeding support program is continuing as a result of its recent successful pilot. A Public Health Nurse breastfeeding specialist will give one-on-one support and counselling for breastfeeding families from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the West Champlain Family Health Team (WCFHT), 315 Pembroke Street East, Pembroke. The FREE support is available for all families living in Renfrew County and District – not just WCFHT patients – thanks to office space volunteered by Dr. Khoudra.
Fall bulbs raise funds for Wilno Rink
The Wilno Recreation Committee asks Valley gardeners to help the Wilno Rink when ordering their fall bulbs for planting. Just make your selection from the online catalogue (link below) and place the order with Joanne Plebon by messaging, calling 756-1407 or by responding on website. Lost Nation Road film screening in Killaloe
Lost Nation Road features local farmer and spiritual activist, Stephen Jenkinson, and Canadian musician, Gregory Hoskins. This short film (25 mins) directed by Canadian filmmaker Ian MacKenzie will be shown at the Killaloe Lions Hall on Tuesday, August 20 at 7 p.m. There will be a Q&A session after the screening with Jenkinson and director Ian MacKenzie. Jenkinson left a career in palliative care, published the book Die Wise and taught internationally before collaborating with Hoskins on the “Nights of Grief and Mystery” tour.
