CRA scam

The Upper Ottawa Valley Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) would like to warn the public of an ongoing telephone scam by imposters claiming to be Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) employees. The fraudsters advise the target that they owe thousands of dollars in back taxes to the CRA and the intended victim is often threatened with arrest and jail if they do not pay immediately.

With the CRA scam the fraudster attempts to create a sense of urgency which may cause the victim to not verify the story. The scammer will often insist that the victim not tell anyone and to transfer the money that has been requested through a money transfer company or even through the victim’s own banking institution. Also, many scammers want to trick you into providing your banking and personal information. In fact, the criminals will fraudulently use your personal information to steal your money.

Social insurance number scam

The Renfrew OPP would like to warn the public of an ongoing telephone scam by imposters claiming to be from the Government and warning of social insurance number frauds. The fraudsters advise the target that their social insurance number has been compromised and the intended victim is often threatened with arrest and jail if they do not provide their social insurance number.

With this scam the fraudster attempts to create a sense of urgency which may cause the victim to not verify the story. The scammer wants to trick you into providing your social insurance number information.

If a scam artist contacts you or if you have been defrauded contact your local police service and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre (CAFC).  You can file a report with the CAFC by calling 1-888-495-8501 (Monday to Friday 9:00am – 5:00pm EST) or by using their online reporting tool at www.antifraudcentre.ca

 

OPP Killaloe Detachment news for the week of Oct. 15-20

During the week of October 15 – October 20, 2019 there 95 were   calls for service for the Killaloe Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), including the Whitney Detachment.

  • There were ten motor vehicle collisions, five were animal related.
  • There were six domestic disputes and no domestic disputes which resulted in criminal code charges

Collisions

On Wednesday October 16, 2019 at approximately 2:55 p.m., Killaloe OPP responded to single vehicle collision involving a jeep on Highway 60, Algonquin Provincial Park. The vehicle had lost control, striking a tree which knocked down several hydro poles. As a result of police investigation, 56-year-old Huang GUOCHEN of Dorval, Quebec has been charged with Careless Driving, contrary to the Highway Traffic Act. The defendant was issued a Provincial Offences Act notice. The driver sustained minor injuries. The vehicle was towed.

On Thursday October 17, 2019 at approximately 5:05 a.m., Killaloe OPP responded to a single vehicle collision involving a passenger car on Opeongo Road, Bonnechere Valley Township. The driver lost control and struck a tree. The 25-year-old driver from Madawaska Valley Township was taken to hospital by ambulance with minor injuries. The vehicle was towed. This incident remains under investigation.
