Was Don Cherry’s firing justified? Have your say in The Current’s poll

Canadian hockey icon Don Cherry has been fired by SportsNet over his controversial outburst slamming new immigrants. During his Coach’s Corner segment last Saturday, Cherry said the failure of new Canadians in his neighbourhood to wear poppies demonstrated a lack of support of Canadian Forces veterans and soldiers who died serving our country. He said, “You people … you love our way of life, you love our milk and honey, at least you can pay a couple bucks for a poppy or something like that. These guys paid for your way of life that you enjoy in Canada, these guys paid the biggest price.”

Cherry’s longtime sidekick, Ron McLean, was also criticized for not challenging Cherry and in fact appearing to agree with his comments. Unlike Cherry, he has since apologized.

David Dolittle’s answer is so perfectly complete !
    It’s my very same thoughts,
McLean is a weak man,… I don’t think he should be fired. I just have much more respect for the man who stands for his convictions.
Don’t go apologizing for the truth. Just leave it out there. Not every single person has to agree.

He is old and old school. He has always been an eccentric but well respected in the sports world fo his offlandish ways. I think he should have his job back with the warning that personal opinions have no space on public television.

I listened to the part that Don Cherry has been criticized for and I don’t see what the issue is. He merely felt that individuals new to this country don’t wear poppies. That’s a likely scenario as they may not know anything about Remembrance day if they’re coming from a culture that doesn’t have Remembrance day. I didn’t here him criticize anyones culture or ethnic background.

    BOYCOTT ROGERS!
Mr. Cherry said nothing that was remotely racist. He spoke openly to ALL Canadians, and that gets the liberal lobby bent out of shape because they do not speak for Canadians at all. The media wonks have stuffed their noses into the trough provided by PETs brat and will brook no discussion that does not agree with the directed narrative.
Time for Canadians to hit them all where it hurts, in their wallets.
    Begin the BOYCOTT.

The problem with people today is they’re too quick to react without giving any thought to the context, circumstances, and the person that made the statement. Knowing Don Cherry is knowing he’s a good person at heart and wants all Canadians, old and new to appreciate what they have and how hard previous generations fought to make Canada what it is today. A diverse and multicultural gem that is envied around the world. It’s truly embarrassing and disappointing to see the vitriolic backlash from my fellow Canadians. We’re better than this…you people.

I’m going to comment about my comment! Nice to hear the other Great One, #4 Bobby Orr weigh in with the same sentiments as me. Social media rules the world…unfortunately.
