Within six minutes of the 11:24 p.m. call on November 13, Madawaska Valley Fire Department responded to a structure fire at Hannah’s Chicken (the former Dixie Lee), 19500 Opeongo Line (Hwy 60) in Barry’s Bay. Chief Fire Officer Corwin Quade said that upon arrival on the scene no flames were visible from the outside, but smoke could seen coming out of the vents. The fire fighters could see heavy thick smoke through the windows, so they did an interior attack by entering through the rear door of the business. They discovered the fire in the cooking area and were able to quickly extinguish it. Sixteen fire fighters from both stations responded to the page, along with two pumpers, one tanker and two rescue trucks.
The fire was contained to a small area; however, the damage from smoke was extensive. Fire fighters were on scene for 45 minutes and used fans to clear the smoke from the buildings. Damage is estimated at $60,000. The cause of the fire is undetermined but it is not suspicious.
Quade praised the fire fighters saying, “With a quick response and great dedicated fire fighters, this was prevented from being a huge loss.”
The owner of Hannah’s Chicken has posted a notice on the door thanking customers for their support and promising to re-open as soon as possible.
