Shooting incident leads to additional charges for MV resident

On October 10 The Current reported on a shooting incident that left a Barry’s Bay man seriously injured. The accused, Shawn Russell, initially faced charges of Careless Use of a Firearm and Possession of Firearm and Ammunition Contrary to Prohibition Order.  Russell appeared in Court in Killaloe again on December 11 and now faces additional charges, including Criminal Negligence causing Bodily Harm and Theft Under $5,000.

The Court was told that Russell was in the process of retaining counsel and his case was adjourned until January 15, 2020.

 

OPP Killaloe media release for December 9 – 15

During the week of December 9 to December 15, 2019 there were 135 calls for service for the Killaloe Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), including the Whitney Detachment.

  • There were seventeen motor vehicle collisions, two were animal related.
  • There were four domestic disputes, one resulted in criminal code charges.

 

Domestic Breach of Peace Bond Conditions Charge

On Tuesday December 10, 2019 at approximately 12:45 p.m. Killaloe OPP responded to a domestic incident which involved breaching court ordered imposed conditions at a residence in Bonnechere Valley Township. As a result of police investigation, a 36-year-old from Bonnechere Valley Township was arrested and charged with Fail to Comply with Peace Bond Conditions, contrary to the Criminal Code. The accused was held and attended a bail court hearing at the Ontario Court of Justice, Pembroke. The name of the accused has been withheld to protect the identity of the victim.

 

Impaired Charges

On Sunday December 15, 2019 at approximately 7:10 p.m. members of the Killaloe OPP detachment located a motor vehicle and driver on Highway 41, Bonnechere Valley Township, that was wanted in relation to criminal charges in Tyendinaga First Nation. Officers attempted to stop the vehicle but the driver failed to pull over. As a result of police investigation, 44-year-old James JOHNSTONE of Tyendinaga First Nation was arrested and charged with:

  • Flight from Police – Criminal Code (CC)
  • Impaired Operation – CC
  • Impaired Over 80 – CC
  • Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm – CC
  • Drive Vehicle with Cannabis Readily Available – Cannabis Control Act (CCA)
  • Drive While Under Suspension – Highway Traffic Act, (HTA)
  • Possession of Over 30 grams Cannabis in a Public Place – Cannabis Act (CA)

The accused was held pending a bail court hearing at the Ontario Court of Justice, Pembroke scheduled for Monday December 16, 2019.

 

Impaired Operation and Drive Disqualified Charges

On Friday December 13, 2019 at approximately 9: 05 p.m. Killaloe OPP conducted a RIDE check program on Kokomis Road, North Algona Wilberforce Township. Police initiated a traffic stop on an all-terrain vehicle (ATV) and the driver. As a result of police investigation, 61-year-old Dennis LAVALLEY of Pikwakanagan Ontario was arrested and charged with Impaired Operation, Over 80 and Drive While Disqualified contrary to the Criminal Code. The accused was released on a Promise to Appear with a court date of Wednesday January 15, 2020 at the Ontario Court of Justice, Killaloe. The vehicle was towed and impounded.
