Take action against domestic violence this International Women’s Day

Editorial

Today, to mark International Women’s Day 2020, the Canadian Women’s Foundation (CWF) seeks your help in the fight against gender-based violence. The CWF has provided a form letter on their website that you can sign to demand that the federal government “take the next step on a National Action Plan to end gender-based violence now.”

CWF provides shocking statistics about domestic violence, something which is reinforced through the weekly OPP reports that The Current publishes. These show the extent to which their resources are taxed by investigations of domestic violence. It is unnecessary to remind local readers that this community in 2015 experienced one of Canada’s most extreme cases of multi-partner domestic homicide.

The CWF website tells us that “in Canada, on average, a woman is killed every 6 days by her intimate partner. And in 2018 alone, a woman or girl was killed every 2.5 days.” It goes on to say: “when women do reach out for help, shelters and sexual assault centres can’t keep up with demand due to chronic underfunding.”
