Madawaska Valley Fire Department were called to the scene of a dramatic single-vehicle crash yesterday at 4:35 p.m. on Siberia Road in Madawaska Valley Township. A black Ford Escape travelling eastbound entered the south ditch striking a culvert. The vehicle went airborne for 48 feet then struck a guyed wire, snapping the wire without damaging the pole. The vehicle appeared to go end-to-end two more times before landing on its wheels and travelling a further 100 feet before it stopped.
The first people on the scene, a woman and her daughter, called in the motor vehicle crash. They were joined by a retired paramedic, and all three stayed on the scene to assist the driver. According to MV Fire Chief Corwin Quade they “did an amazing job, with providing details to the emergency personnel. The bystanders were also very respectful staying back from the scene to allow us to complete the task at hand.”
The retired paramedic also assisted with removing the driver from the vehicle. The driver, a 66-year-old male from Kanata, was conscious and talking the whole time. Paramedics transported him to St. Francis Memorial Hospital with undetermined injuries. Quade said, “The driver was wearing his seat belt and the air bags deployed which saved him from more serious injury.”
The Fire Chief and his Deputy from North Hall were the first fire fighters on the scene, MV Fire Department having been called out for suppression. Responding to the call were two trucks from the North Hall and eleven fire fighters, one OPP officer, and two paramedics and one paramedic supervisor. The scene was cleared in 40 minutes.
