Canada Day with a difference

July 1 2020 was a glorious summer’s day and people in the Valley took advantage of it. Our nation’s flag proudly flew in the sunshine over the Barry’s Bay Legion. Photo above.

But celebrations were a little different this year due to COVID-19.

Instead of the traditional cake cutting at the Railway Station, Madawaska Valley Township took a virtual approach and held a video ceremony at noon on Facebook Live, with Councillor Mark Willmer reading the municipality’s Canada Day message to residents before the national anthem was played. MV also postponed its fireworks to Labour Day Weekend in order to avoid large gatherings. (Above: MV Council, staff and community representatives raise flags at Zurakowski Park. Barry’s Bay Legion Branch 406 held a Family Barbecue for supporters, complete with appropriate physical distancing between households and social circles in the line-up and patio. Patrons could sit in the shaded outdoor area or take their lunches “To Go.” (Above: diners wave as they wait for their burgers and hotdogs)

Legion volunteers told The Current they had to replenish the supply of burgers and hotdogs several times. Branch 406 President Heather Poliquin was grateful for the community support. She said, “The Branch would like to thank everyone who came out and supported us at the Family Barbecue on July 1st, by purchasing food and/or making a donation.  We would also like to thank those who donated but could not make it to the event. A special thank you to the 50/50 winner, Jim, for donating his winnings back to the Legion. It was much appreciated.”

She noted another difference at this year’s event, adding, “The Branch also sends our deepest condolences to the family of Anastasia Yakabuskie.  We will miss her smiling face at our Bingos and her “I love Canada” outfit worn on Canada Day celebrations at the Legion.  May she rest in peace.”
