MNRF Pembroke – Water Safety Condition in effect to April 1

On March 25 the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry (MNRF) Pembroke District issued the first of this spring’s Watershed Conditions Statement – Water Safety. The Water Safety condition is in effect in the District until Thursday, April 1, 2021. MNRF advises that while flooding is not expected in the near future, residents in Renfrew County should be aware that ice on area lakes is becoming unsafe and water levels and flows in rivers are increasing due to warming temperatures, forecast precipitation and the remaining snow melting. It is advised to exercise caution near lakes and rivers and to keep a close watch on children and pets at all times to ensure that everyone stays safe. Current conditions

Warmer than normal temperatures during March brought an early start to spring with the result that most of the snow is gone from open areas around the County and areas that do still have snow are melting quickly. Due to the extended melt and very little precipitation recently, area lakes and rivers are at average levels and flood thresholds are not expected to be reached at this time based on current forecasts.

The ice is thinning on large lakes throughout the County and rivers and streams are opening as the ice melts. As the ice on lakes and rivers melts, it can be expected that water levels will respond accordingly.

MNRF’s definition of the Water Safety condition indicates that high flows, melting ice or other factors could be dangerous for such users as boaters, anglers and swimmers but flooding is not expected.

First spring freshet call

Madawaska Valley Fire Chief Corwin Quade advises that the first spring freshet conference call of the year occurred on March 24. He reports:

  • Bark Lake has been drawn down its lowest level
  • Kamaniskeg Lake and the Madawaska River are not expected to see any real changes over the next week
  • Water levels are at average to below average for this time of the year
  • There are no flooding concerns at this time, or in the foreseeable future

The spring freshet conference calls involve partners from MNRF Districts and local municipal emergency coordination teams and occur on a weekly basis during the season. The Current will continue to report these so as to help to keep residents and property owners aware of potential flood risks.
