Celebrate Kashub Day differently

Since 1999 the Wilno Heritage Society has held its annual Kashub Day Festival at Wilno Heritage Park on the first Saturday in May, but thanks to COVID-19 the celebrations are cancelled again this year. During Ontario’s current stay-at-home orders, the Opeongo Readers’ Theatre offers you a different way to celebrate. Their special edition show, “Kashubs of the West,” will be available after 2:00 p.m. on Sunday May 2.

The show, hosted by Cathy Chapeskie, features Joshua Blank, Peter Glofcheskie, Angela Lorbetskie, Shirley Mask-Connolly and Theresa Prince reading from their latest local history research. They will tell the story of how Kashubian settlers came to be here in Renfrew County. According to podcast producer, Barry Conway, it’s a story “full of twists and turns and fun facts and great anecdotes, including how first confessions were heard with little more than the squeeze of a hand.”
