Polling station
As usual, the Opeongo Seniors Centre at 19 Stafford Street, Barry’s Bay will provide a polling station for the election:
- Advanced voting takes place from Friday, Sept.10 to Monday, Sept.13
- Election Day voting will be held on Monday, Sept.20
What’s new at the Centre?
During the Covid period, Leah Kinghorn said the Centre has benefited from new windows (including installation) which should improve the energy efficiency of the building. The local donor wishes to remain anonymous, but she said that seniors greatly appreciate their generosity.
The fully accessible lower level (elevator) has been turned into a Games Room complete with pool table, TV, dart board, shuffleboard, as well as some fitness machines.
The Seniors were pleased to provide the lawn area behind the Centre for the Madawaska Valley Gardening Club annual Flower and Vegetable show, and there is interest in developing some garden beds for local seniors who do not have access to an outdoor area to exercise their green thumbs.
Schedule
You can drop in for coffee, tea and companionship on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11 am to 2 pm. While you’re there you can prepay the annual membership fee which is due in October — still just $25 a year. Kinghorn hopes the Centre can offer its full schedule starting October including occasional meals. Judging by the turnout at the recent Chili Lunch, these occasions will be popular. Other activities on the wish list scheduled for return when protocols allow: live music, fitness and dancing classes, art group, outings such as a fall colour tour or shopping excursion, etc. For details check out the monthly calendar at opeongoseniors.ca
