National Day for Truth and Reconciliation  – Sept.30

In recognition of National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, many local offices will be closed so that staff and management may observe this holiday. Closures have been announced by Madawaska Valley Township, Northern Credit Union, and others.

Renfrew County Official Plan Amendment takes effect

On Sept.17 the County of Renfrew announced that Official Plan Amendment 31 (OPA 31) had completed the mandated public review and comment period without appeal and is now in effect.

“With OPA 31 now in place, the County of Renfrew has a foundational document that will assist our communities manage the expected growth across the region over the next several years,” said Warden Debbie Robinson. “We appreciate all of the public input on this project. We would also like to thank MPP John Yakabuski who worked tirelessly with his Provincial colleagues, especially Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing Steve Clark, to espouse the virtues of an Official Plan with Renfrew County context.”


Catch The Ace Week #14 Winner

Congratulations to St, Francis Valley Healthcare Foundation’s Week #14 Catch the Ace Lottery winner Del MacGregor of Brighton. Del’s ticket was chosen on September 16th and he was the lucky recipient of the weekly prize of $1,041! He picked envelope #19 which revealed the Ten of Hearts. The ticket was purchased at CO Country Market in Combermere. Del chose number nineteen as it has always been a lucky number. Del plans to purchase more tickets and to share some of his winnings with family. The Weekly Prize for Week #15 is estimated at $1,050 and if the Ace of Spades is found, the Total Winnings will be around $22,779. All proceeds support the purchase of essential medical equipment for St Francis Memorial Hospital. MV Gardening Club virtual meeting ‘The Land Between’

This week MV Gardening Club members can enjoy the second virtual meeting of 2021 (another one is scheduled for October). “The Land Between” features Leora Berman. As the co-founder of this national charity, Leora has many years of experience in the stewardship of the remaining wilderness in southern Ontario. She will explain why protecting our local area is vital to the continuation of a uniquely diverse environment.

The meeting takes place this Thursday, Sept.23, 2021 07:30 PM Eastern Time (US and Canada). Existing members will have received a Zoom invitation from Peter Dolan. If you haven’t renewed your membership yet, you can choose one of the methods below.

1) E-transfer: send $10 to mvgardeningclub30@gmail.com   Please include member’s name(s) in the message section and remember to separately email your security answer to the same address.

2) Snail mail a cheque: write a $10 cheque payable to Madawaska Valley Horticultural Society (Caution!! Our legal name remains as Horticultural Society) and send to Madawaska Valley Horticultural Society  PO Box 1151, Barry’s Bay, ON   K0J 1B0 Again, please indicate member’s name(s).

3) Drop money off: if you happen to see one of the executives, or know their home, hand it in person. He/She will pass your $10 to our Treasurer Connie.


MKC Essay Competition deadline Sept.30

As part of its fiftieth anniversary in 2021, Madawaska Kanu Centre (MKC) announced an essay contest last March, and the winner will get a free weekend getaway at MKC with meals, accommodation and paddling instruction (value $600).

To enter, contestants should write a short entry on the topic “What can you learn by paddling a river”. The contest will run until September 30, 2021 and a winner will be selected in November. The essay will be published in MKC’s Anniversary cookbook that celebrates the paddling centre’s confluence of good food and river experiences.

The Flowers for Seniors Project and Church Street Flowers are collaborating on this creative and enjoyable afternoon. Light refreshments.
