Quick-acting witnesses prevent major fire damage

Prompted by a cloud of smoke, a Madawaska Valley resident called 9-1-1 to report a trailer on fire at a Combermere Road property on Saturday afternoon. A neighbour, who had also observed the smoke, arrived on the scene to help. MV Fire Department extinguished the fire, and Fire Chief Corwin Quade said the quick actions of the two men prevented any major property damage from the blaze. Combermere resident Chad Beckwith Smith called 9-1-1 on seeing “a lot of smoke” and while waiting for fire fighters he moved a snowmobile away from the fire. The resident of a nearby property arranged for some heavy equipment to push the burning trailer away from a three-bay garage.

Quade reported the call came in as a “fully involved” trailer in the 40000 block of Combermere Road, some 12 kms from the fire hall. He said within 17 minutes MV Fire Dept. was on the scene with a pumper, a rescue truck and twelve fire fighters. They extinguished the fire within ten minutes and stayed on site for 35 minutes to ensure there were no flare ups. No one was at home and there were no injuries from the incident. In addition to the loss of the trailer, he estimated property damage at between $5,000 and $6,000 to garage siding and door. The cause of the fire is unknown, but Quade said it is not being treated as suspicious.
