Food Bank wins MVPL trophy at Cabin Fever Trivia Quiz

The Paul J. Yakabuski Community Centre lounge was busy on Friday evening as teams battled to be this year’s champions of the Cabin Fever Trivia Quiz hosted by Madawaska Valley Public Library. The evening’s winners were the Madawaska Valley Food Bank Team. MV Library CEO and Secretary/Treasurer Natalie Barrington welcomed everyone to the quiz night and introduced the Library Board members who, along with MVPL regular volunteers, assisted at the door, helped with a lengthy door prize draw, worked in the canteen, participated as team members, or tallied and recorded the teams’ scores. The MVPL Board consists of Bill Houle (Chair), Mary Conway (policy review), Betty Kirby (Vice-Chair), Hannah Domagala, Claire Sullivan, Mary Blank (MV Council representative), and Kevin Quade (BLR Council representative).Teams of up to six people paid $75 per team for the privilege of competing, to make this year’s Cabin Fever Trivia Quiz the second more important fundraising event for the Library. Quizmaster Stephen Petrick from 106.5 MooseFM donated his time to host the evening and control the excitement of the eager trivia nerds as he read out the one hundred quiz questions and answers. Barrington also publicly acknowledged the many local businesses and organizations who, like The Current, sponsored the event with products, vouchers, gift certificates, and cash, or with an in-kind donation such as Madawaska Valley Township who provided use of the PJYC Lounge.

The quiz was divided into four rounds covering current affairs and cultural topics including history, geography, sport, technology, art, mythology, and more. The Food Bank team told The Current about two questions that challenged them and inspired the most dissension among their members:

1. M&M – What do the letters in the popular confection’s name stand for?

2. In what sport will you hear the terms “bump, floater, wipe?”

The evening lasted more than two hours, with the trivia questions being grouped into four rounds. During comfort breaks between rounds, volunteers drew tickets for the many door prizes on offer, while volunteer scorers checked the teams’ answer sheets. Quiz participants eagerly listened for the numbers as each trivia team member had received a draw ticket on arrival. The generosity of local businesses and prize donors ensured that by the end of the evening, there were winners (often multiple prizes) on each of the 14 teams participating in this community event. MVPL provided the full list of sponsors: Afelskie Shoes, Barry’s Bay Home Hardware Building Centre, Barry’s Bay Shell, Bent Pizza Pie, Blue Bird Collective, Church Street Flowers, Clifford G. Blank, CO Country Market, Eve’s Escape Spa & Welness Centre, Gift It Gray, Lorraine’s Pharmasave, MacEwen Barry’s Bay, Mad Outdoors, Northern Credit Union, Pantry Savings, Talk O’ The Town, The Madawaska Valley Current, The Wilno Craft Gallery, Trends Salon, V&S Stedmans Barry’s Bay, Wilno Tavern, and Yantha’s.
