MV Council rejects petition to reconsider Pride flag vote

At this morning’s Council in Committee meeting in Barry’s Bay, Madawaska Valley Council heard from a delegation opposing their Resolution last month to declare the month of June as Pride Month in the municipality and to project an image of the Pride flag on the digital screen outside the Paul J. Yakabuski Community Centre. Above at desk: Noah Kluke (left) and Rae Stanley present Petition to Council.

The Council Chamber at 85 Bay Street was filled to capacity, with audience members standing in the corridor or squatting behind the rows of seats. Rae Stanley, on behalf of the Petitioners against the MV Resolution, acknowledged the audience was made up of both supporters of the Pride flag and those in opposition to the issue. At the conclusion of the delegation, Mayor Mark Willmer called for questions or comments from members of Council. Given that there were none, he declared that the May 16th Resolution will stand as voted at last month’s Council meeting.

Full report of the meeting to follow.
