Santa Claus Parade brings joy to Madawaska Valley

The Madawaska Valley Township Santa Claus Parade was held on Saturday, December 2, 2023, in Barry’s Bay. The street was lined with hundreds of people, young and old alike, who enjoyed the festive and cheerful atmosphere. Above: an MV Lion leads the annual parade; Santa Claus arrives by sleigh.

The weather was perfect, sunny and bright with a light dusting of snow. The parade was led by a lion and the OPP, followed by the Lion’s Club float. The parade featured various floats, groups and even horse back riders that showcased the community spirit and diversity of the region.

Lots of candy was handed out to the children along the parade route, who eagerly awaited the arrival of Santa Claus. The Brochu family were one of many who enjoyed the sights and sounds and of course candy. Pictured are Amanda and Martin with their three children James, Caroline and the youngest Jack.

Most popular was the Grinch, who looked mean, but despite its grumpy appearance, gifted children with candy. The children were delighted to see the green character, who seemed to have a change of heart after visiting Madawaska Valley.

Laura Stevens belted out Christmas tunes from the Opeongo Snowbirds float, which was decorated with Christmas trees, lights, a welcoming fire and even a rescue dog! The Snowbirds are a local group who support and maintain our snowmobile trails. They also participate in various community events and activities throughout the year.

Wagons for the Madawaska Valley Food Bank pulled by volunteers were full, thanks to the generous donations of the residents. The Food Bank provides food and other essentials to those in need in the area, especially during the holiday season. The Food Bank also accepts monetary donations, which can be made online or in person.

And of course the highlight was Santa himself, wishing everyone a very Merry Christmas. Santa arrived on a sleigh pulled by his trusty reindeers, accompanied by his Home Hardware elves. He waved and smiled to the crowd, who cheered and clapped for him.

The Santa Claus Parade was a success, thanks to the organizers, participants, and spectators. It was a wonderful way to kick off the holiday season and to celebrate the community spirit of Madawaska Valley.
