Library Trivia Night – a win for all

You might think the Jeopardy Rejects pictured above were the biggest winners at last Friday evening’s Trivia Night. Of course The Current congratulates them for their first place standing in the popular general knowledge quiz. But if you really consider the effect of last Friday’s event, it is all the members of this community who are the real winners from Trivia Night, as well as any other fundraising events that support your Library.

The November 1st general knowledge challenge was extremely well attended. Host for the evening, Sean Conway, pointed out that every one of the 17 tables was occupied by a team. With generous support from competitors, attendees and sponsors, more than $1,400 was raised for Library programs. Local businesses and individuals donated 17 door prizes – among them were Metro, Grumbin’ Granny’s, Andrea’s Pet Salon and Boutique, Councillor Mary Blank, Clifford Blank, York Power, Heubner Funeral Home, Pharmasave Lorraine’s, V&S Stedman’s, Yantha’s, Algonquin East Animal Clinic, Sara Hammer/Exit Realty, and MV Wolves.

Natalie Barrington, Library CEO, said that among the competitors there are several teams who loyally attend every trivia night – twice a year. She thanked them for their continued support, saying this demonstrates that trivia night is more than a fundraiser — it is also a community tradition! Among the experienced competitors were teams from the Madawaska Valley Food Bank and the Madawaska Valley Gardening Club who tied for Second Place. A team from Our Lady Seat of Wisdom College finished in Fourth Place.

According to the volunteer scorers who checked each team’s answer sheets, this year’s most difficult question was: “This unique organization is active in 84 countries, and is known for lending people instead of books. What is this organization called?” Please scroll down for answer.

Something new for next year’s Trivia Night – each competing team was asked to submit a general knowledge question that will be used to challenge the 2025 know-it-alls. Barrington confirmed that these questions and answers will be fact-checked before inclusion in the quiz next spring.

Editor’s Note: This article was amended on Nov.10th to correct the names of the winning team, and to reflect the placement of the Seat of Wisdom College team. Apologies to our readers for these mistakes.
