More than March Break at your Public Library

Valley residents have come to expect the Madawaska Valley Public Library to provide a full complement of activities for kids whenever school is out. While this year’s March Break programming certainly will not disappoint parents or kids, The Current can tell you that there’s a whole lot more on offer from the Library than just activities for school aged children.

New this month

The promise of spring and warm weather comes to MV Library with its announcement to start a Seed Library. Above: Seed Library notice (MVPL) If you have saved seeds from your garden or ordered more than you need at home, please donate to help build a good collection for the new Seed Library. Please sort your seeds into sealed, labelled envelopes before dropping them off at the Library.

BIAK Early On! returns to MV Public Library on Tuesday, March 11th at 10:30am. Register your preschooler for this fun experience that includes songs, drumming, stories and a take-home activity.

The library will be at the Palmer Rapids Recreation Centre on Thursday, March 13 with Let’s Talk Science! Contact the library to sign up. Call 613-756-2000 or email programs@madawaskavalleylibrary.ca

Fiero Code is an e-resource that is automatically included in your Library membership. MV Public Library starts a new Coding Club on Thursday, March 13th at 6:30, to introduce kids (of ALL ages) to this really cool e-resource. Fiero is a self-paced application to learn to code, build your own website, design video games, and more.

Your kids can enjoy a St. Patrick’s Day Party courtesy of MV Public Library in collaboration with the Township of Madawaska Valley on Friday, March14th from 10am – 12pm in the Upstairs Lounge at the Paul J. Yakabuski Community Centre, Barry’s Bay. Dexter and Serena Sernoskie will provide live music, Paige Mask will be on hand for face painting, there will be a scavenger hunt with prizes, crafts, snacks and lots more. Remind your kids to wear green!

Lego Club meets at the Library on the third Saturday of each month. The March 15th meeting will be a Competition, with fun games, activities and prizes. Please register for the competition by email to programs@madawaskavalleylibrary.ca or by phone 613-756-2000

Of interest to travellers and pilgrims seeking an Iberian adventure is the Travel Talk entitled “Camino de Santiago” on Saturday, March 22nd at 1:30pm at the Royal Canadian Legion Barry’s Bay Branch 406, 250 John Street. Hear about the experience and learn how to prepare and pack for the journey.

Community Employment Service brings another pop-up Job Seeker/Employment session to the Library on Thursday, Mar.27th between 1pm – 3pm. You can get free help in finding employment, honing your resume, practising interview skills, and more. Contact CES to make an appointment by phone 613-628-1700 or by email ces@algonquincollege.com

This month’s art exhibition comes from MV artist Kelly MacLeod. Enjoy examples of her work all month long and meet her at the Library on Thursday, March 27th at 6pm.

March Break

March Break programming is always very popular, so remember to register as soon as possible either by phone 613-756-2000 or by email to programs@madawaskavalleylibrary.ca

Ongoing programs at the Library

Library staff present StoryTime every Wednesday morning when Valley little ones can enjoy a story and snack at 10:30am.

The Adult Walking Group meets at the Library every Friday afternoon at 1pm for a group walk around Barry’s Bay and returns to the Library for a warm drink afterwards.

Regular groups such as Book Club and Adult Craft & Chat meet monthly.

Keep an eye on the Library Facebook page for notice of the next pop-up session by Service Canada – there’s one coming this spring.

The Library continues to offer a Used Book Sale downstairs. Feel free to donate used books (no text books or reference books please).

In addition to borrowing books, e-books, e-audiobooks, DVDs, board games, and more, ask Library staff about the free craft and STEM kits to keep your kids busy at home.

Yes, there’s lots more than just March Break programming at your Public Library.
