St. Patrick’s Day celebrations

Here are some of the local events planned for the wearing of the green:

  • Friday, Mar.14 10am-12pm The Madawaska Valley Public Library hosts a party for kids in the upstairs lounge at the Paul J. Yakabuski Community Centre in Barry’s Bay. Live music from Dexter & Serena Sernoskie, face-painting by Paige Mask, a scavenger hunt with prizes, crafts, snacks and more.
  • Friday, Mar.14 4pm-8pm The Royal Canadian Legion Barry’s Bay Branch 406 invites you to celebrate in the Club Room. Stew and a bun is on offer for $10, and you can enjoy live music from Mike Kelly.
  • Friday, Mar.14 5pm-8pm Reverend Ken (yes, that’s Barry’s Bay’s Rev.Ken Ramsden!) sings Irish tunes at the Whitewater Brew Pub in Cobden. Ken will be joined by his friends, Fiddlin’ Ned and Al Francouer, from the Dan O’Connell Irish session in Ottawa. Enjoy the music over a pint of craft beer or reserve an Irish-inspired dinner in advance by calling 613-646-0101.

Lunar eclipse

For those who love the dark night skies in the Valley, you can watch a lunar eclipse this week. In this region, the excitement begins just before midnight on Thursday, Mar.13th and continues for approximately six hours. If the clouds hold off, between 2:30am-3:30am on Friday, Mar.14th you should be able to witness the total lunar eclipse with a completely red “blood moon.” The eclipse will be at its maximum with the moon closest to the centre of the shadow at 2:58am.


Spring equinox ritual

Celebrate the spring equinox on Friday, Mar.21st between 6pm-8pm at Community Resource Centre, 12 North Street in Killaloe. All ages are welcome – pagan or not! You may wish to bring a snack to share, or a drum or rattle.


Travel talk – Camino de Santiago

Santiago de Compostela in Galicia, Spain has been the destination of pilgrims throughout the ages. The Madawaska Valley Public Library hosts a travel talk about the Camino at the Royal Canadian Legion Barry’s Bay Branch 406 on Saturday, Mar.22 at 1:30pm. Whether you want to know about the experience for reasons of religious devotion or for the physical exercise of walking up to 825 km, you can learn how to prepare and pack for the journey.


Open Studio

Ottawa Valley Community Arts hosts this FREE intergenerational art workshop on Saturday, Mar.22 from 1pm-4pm at the Paul J. Yakabuski Community Centre. No experience is necessary, and all materials and snacks are provided. The session is facilitated by Linda Archibald and Anya Gansterer. Children under the age of 10 must be accompanied by an adult. Broom Dance show at Morninglory Farm

Birdbone Theatre presents a shadow puppet show for all ages called Broom Dance on Wednesday, Mar.26th at 7:00pm in the Farmhouse, Morninglory Farm, Killaloe. The production is described as a “show for winter and winter witches, a shadow song for the threshold, for the liminal lace between light and dark, between house and the howling wild.
