Happy Thanksgiving to you and every member of your household from everyone here at The Current. It’s been a while since we published any Bite-sized News articles, as the past few months have been all about travel, taking it easier, spending time with family. Having recharged our batteries, we’re back on schedule now. This round-up of fall Valley events should appeal to many different interests.

Madawaska Valley Gardening Club

Thursday Oct.16 from 7pm at the Opeongo Seniors Centre, 19 Stafford Street, Barry’s Bay. The first half hour is your chance to participate in a Seed Exchange with other gardeners. Then guest speaker Ole Hendrickson, President of the Ottawa River Institute, will give an overview of the Ottawa River Watershed in which the Madawaska Valley lies. Before retirement in 2012, Hendrickson was a forest research scientist and served as Canada’s biodiversity science focal point for the UN Convention on Biological Diversity. Everyone is welcome. The $15 annual membership fee covers monthly meetings such as this.


Madawaska Valley Public Library OPEN HOUSE

Saturday Oct.18 from 10am to 3pm at MV Public Library, 19474 Opeongo Line, Barry’s Bay. Everyone is welcome to drop in, learn about Library services, and participate in a Scavenger Hunt. Enjoy coffee, tea, treats and take-home kits for kids. Participate in a Craft Workshop at 1pm with Artist of the Month Nicole Conway.


Ottawa Valley Community Arts Workshop

Art in Changing Times – Saturday, Oct.18 from 11am to 4pm at 12 North Street Community Centre, Killaloe. Ottawa Valley Community Arts brings you this FREE Last Minute Assemblage and Collage Workshop facilitated by Linda Archibald and Anya Gansterer. Valley residents and visitors of all ages are invited to drop in any time during the day to make art and have fun. No experience necessary. All materials and snacks are provided. Decades Dinner & Dance in aid of Bonnechere Museum

Saturday Nov.1 2025 from 5pm to 12am at the Eganville Legion. Dress in the decade of your choice to attend this fundraiser in aid of Bonnechere Museum, a heritage fixture in the Valley heritage that is not publicly funded. You’ll enjoy a 1950s inspired four-course menu by Chef Danny of Charlie’s Eatery. A silent auction follows while DJ Shannon spins dance tunes. Tickets $85 for dinner & dance; $20 for dance only. Available through Eventbrite.ca. Search for “Decades Dance” with your location set to Eganville.


Registration for Toy Drive now open

It’s scary to realize how soon Christmas arrives after Thanksgiving. The good news is that the Community Resource Centre in Killaloe has opened registration for the annual Toy Drive. Families in Whitney, Madawaska, Barry’s Bay, Combermere, Palmer Rapids, Quadeville, Round Lake and Killaloe, who need help for the holidays, can phone 613-757-3108 to register, or register online by scanning the QR Code below.
