Happy New Year … but will Trump ruin it for Canadians?

Editorial

The Current wishes all its readers a very happy, healthy and prosperous New Year. Unfortunately, as we woke up this morning to learn that Donald Trump and his corrupt regime have declared war on Venezuela without advising Congress – let alone obtaining its approval – Canadians must face up to the risk of becoming the next victims of the monster in the White House, or what remains of it.

Early last year and coinciding with his public announcements that Canada should become the 51st state, he made blatantly false accusations about our role in fentanyl trafficking into the United States. He also threatened to resort to economic pressure on us in order to achieve this. He has recently doubled down on these threats leaving no doubt that his lust for acquiring Canada remains a prime obsession on his part.

Yet according to responsible American media outlets which of course do not include Fox News, his accusations have conclusively been proved to be fictitious. For example, in an article dated August 1st 2025 titled “What to know about Canada and fentanyl” the New York Times reported that less than 0.01 per cent of the fentanyl arriving in the US last year came from Canada according to data from no less than US Customs and Border Protection. Yet despite this Trump has insinuated that he would not hesitate to take hostile steps against Canada if his fantasized claims continued to exist in his mind  which they seemingly continue to do.

Turning now to his de facto declaration of war on, and invasion of, Venezuela and the kidnapping of its President and his wife, another New York Times article dated November 19th 2025 declared “Venezuela doesn’t produce fentanyl. Trump is targeting it anyway.” Its investigation established that “… the fentanyl used illegally in the United States does not come from Venezuela.” Despite this, Trump has been indiscriminately bombing, sinking and murdering the occupants of Venezuelan small fishing boats, which he alleges without offering any proof are conveying drugs to the US. Numerous media reports both written and broadcast have shot down the legitimacy of this conduct, which he continuously boasts about, by offering various reasons why he is resorting to what amounts to criminal acts and, now, the invasion of another country.

These include, in no particular order:

  • being the conduct of a deranged despot
  • diversionary tactics to distract from his sinking popularity
  • to steal Venezuela’s oil (He has said that he covets our oil and our mineral resources.)
  • to divert attention away from the release of the Epstein files, with much more still to come
  • all of the above.

It remains to be seen what the global reaction and responses will be to this declaration of war and invasion of Venezuela which involved indiscriminate bombing with some deaths in various parts of the country. However, so far as Canada is concerned, given that we must be considered as a potential target of Trump, hopefully our response will be as unrestrained as are the frequent YouTube posts by former MP Charlie Angus. He pulls absolutely no punches in his condemnation of Trump, who he frequently describes as a “mobster” and similar terms.

The falsity of Trump’s excuse of drug smuggling is demonstrated irrefutably by the fact that it comes from the same man who recently pardoned former Honduran president, Juan Orlando Hernandez. He was convicted for being “at the centre of one of the largest and most violent drug trafficking conspiracies in the world” because of his role in bringing more than 400 tons of cocaine into the US. Trump pardoned him on December 2nd, after he had served only several weeks of a 45 year jail term …

Finally, for an analysis of Trump’s rampant dishonesty, it is worth reading the article “Donald Trump’s top 25 lies of 2025” prepared by CNN’s chief fact checker Daniel Dale (who is a Canadian). Click HERE for link.

Be prepared for even worse to come.

More thoughts:- this American invasion and annexation of Venezuela seems to be a dress-rehearsal for future American invasions and annexations of Greenland and Canada (since we are definitely “the meat in the sandwich” geopolitically). Until last Saturday (Jan 3/26) that seemed like a fantastical conspiracy theory but now it seems very real with visions of an American Gestapo dragging us Canadians out of our beds and shipping us off to secret concentration camps in an American Gulag while they appoint Canadian quislings to govern Canada on their behalf and give aid to all the carpet-baggers they will be sending in here to steal everything in sight and despoiling our country while they supposedly “liberate” it. However now we have Pierre Poilievre heartily approving of the American invasion of Venezuela without any regard as to the adverse consequences for Canada so perhaps he knows something we don’t and is preparing to be the “quisling” governor Trump will appoint to govern us as an American territory while he and his henchmen plunder Canada. Perhaps the Conservatives had better think carefully whether they want a would-be “quisling-in-waiting” leading their party and using it to aid and abet a wild and lawless foreign gangster in pillaging Canada. It does remind one of the Biblical story about Judas selling out Jesus for 13 pieces of silver:- is Pierre Poilievre really a “Judas goat” leading us to the slaughter? I wonder what Cheryl Gallant thinks about our impending forced Americanization? In these troublous times it’s good to know who our friends really are and who are not our friends.

The “fun” in Venezuela has just started! Venezuelans are not zombified Canadians and you can expect popular riots and guerrilla warfare to be directed against American troops and any Venezuelans perceived to be “Trump’s stooges”. Of course Colombia and Panama will covertly support Venezuelan guerrillas by sending them arms and supplies and Communist China will be supporting them. When the first dead American soldiers start to return to the USA then of course Americans will explode in revulsion and Trump might find himself being dragged through another impeachment. His approval rating is now only 36% and sliding steadily downward and no US President has had such a low approval rating since they started that type of polling. It’s even much lower than Joe Biden at his worst. This is also a Congressional mid-term election year and many Republicans are very worried about being re-elected. Trump also has Zohran Mamdani, new mayor of NYC and a flakey radical “pink-lemonade” socialist, thumbing his nose at Trump and calling him a variety of derogatory names. Trump has also been promising to “invade” and “conquer” NYC with a military takeover and an arrest of Mamdani, the “Communist”, which will no doubt provoke big demonstations, riots, and even guerrilla warfare in the streets of NYC. If you took the time to read his various biographies you will soon realize that Donald Trump likes to go looking for trouble, find lots of it, and get into fights he cannot win:- he’s quite the sociopath. That’s why his previous careers as a real-estate developer and television host fizzled out along with his first Presidency:- he just has a penchant for self-defeating behaviour and making himself increasingly unpopular.
