Editorial
Yesterday at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Prime Minister Carney gave a speech pointedly targeting Trump without mentioning his name. He described the end of an era underpinned by United States’ domination, saying that this has now been ruptured. “Every day we are reminded that we live in an era of great power rivalry and that the rules-based order is fading; that the strong can do what they can and the weak must suffer what they must.” In other words, be prepared to be bullied and accept the consequences. His speech was greeted with a rare standing ovation and has received much complimentary coverage in the global media.
Contrast his speech with Trump’s address today which contained his typical lies and ridiculous self-praise about, among other things, the success of the US economy under his leadership. Truly, it was even more cringeworthy than his usual public displays of self-obsession. The fact-checkers are going to have a field day, as always. A Channel 4 reporter today spoke to a diplomat who was present who said, “What we heard today is not what you expect from a president – it’s what you expect from a 1980s mob boss.” Trump also spoke at mind-numbing length on his belief that he was entitled to acquire Greenland (which he several times referred to as “Iceland”).
In a recent editorial we discussed the potential risk that Canadians face at the hands of this demented megalomaniac. The image above was posted by Trump himself on his X.com social media account named “Trump War Room.” Earlier this week, he confirmed his entitlement to annex Canada.
Disturbingly, in addition to proposing that he should be able to seek a third term, he has intimated that he may have grounds to cancel the midterm elections, unsurprising given his tanking popularity in the polls and the likelihood that congressional power will be transferred to the Democrats. He knows that if that happens, the floodgates will open in terms of articles of impeachment on multiple grounds as well as criminal investigations and likely even more felony charges against him.
It cannot be a coincidence that he has recently begun to float the idea of perhaps needing to invoke the Insurrection Act to deal with the growing number of demonstrations focusing on his conduct. That conduct on a daily basis is being ratcheted up so as to generate even more public outrage, thus enabling him to justify sending large masses of masked thugs into cities who only serve to make matters worse, which is probably what he intends. How many of those include the 1,500 convicts that he pardoned for storming the capital on January 6th 2021?
One means of him attempting to achieve that goal is abusing the Insurrection Act, claiming the existence of an emergency when the inevitable further demonstrations against his actions take place. That probably explains why he is already provoking widespread demonstrations across the country, most recently inflamed by his evil blaming of the victim of an ICE cold-blooded killing of a woman in her car as being her fault, and accusing her of being a “terrorist” among other things.
Becoming more belligerent against Canada, as well as Greenland, on top of his ongoing abuse of power will increase the climate of orchestrated social upheaval and we know that he will not hesitate to use ICE and his other cult members to create mayhem on the streets of America thereby providing grounds to falsely claim the existence of an “insurrection.”
Regretfully, based on what they have let him get away with so far, one cannot expect the party he leads, whose name really ought to be changed to The Repugnant Party, to honour their oaths to the American people by thwarting his conduct. This includes the fact that the New York Times has calculated, based on a very thorough investigation and with evidence they have identified, that the Trump family has increased its wealth by the sum of $1.5 billion (not including money he has received from off-the-record sources) during his second term through, for example, payment for pardons, “donations” by billionaires in exchange for preferential treatment, and, potentially, other alleged criminal activities including crypto scams.
However, Trump has put in place an effective barrier preventing any serious investigation of his conduct through his appointment of many boot-lickers, resulting in unscrupulous and incompetent cabinet members, departmental appointments, including most egregiously by turning the Department of Justice into his own personal law firm. This has enabled him to, among other things, disobey the law that he signed authorizing the release of all the Epstein files. For what it’s worth, the writer shares the belief that his motive for this is not to hide his conduct with young women (after all there is already plenty of evidence of that), but rather it possibly relates to his shady dealings starting in the 1990s in conjunction with Epstein with the Kremlin and Russian oligarchs and money-laundering activities facilitating the transfer of huge sums out of Russia and through the US to off-shore havens. Many may remember the reports that circulated about him selling condominiums to Russians at vastly inflated prices …
We can therefore only hope that the Democrats, who have been showing signs of being far more robust recently in their efforts to frustrate Trump’s agenda, are able to ensure that the constitution is upheld and the American public will have the opportunity next November to effect a much-needed transfer of power.

All of what is currently happening in the US was predicted in Project 25, a 900-page document (available to read on-line) that clearly outlines the conservative blueprint for radically reshaping the US federal government, by-passing the Constitution, ultimately placing greater power in the hands of the president (few people were aware of this document’s existence prior to the 2024 election). Trump has already implemented many of the Project’s proposals without much interference and he is just getting started. It is now clear that he will try to control the outcome of the US mid-term elections in November in his favor likely using intimidation and possibly the Insurrection Act to control any opposition. In the meantime, will the GOP wake up? What will it take?
I agree with you Karen ….big time ….. and you as well Eve-Marie. He’s definitely mentally disturbed.
Donald Trump is certainly one crazy old coot and obviously slowly going insane. However if you had read his various biographies when he first became famous back in ca 2005 you would know this is the pattern of his life:- he persistently engages in self-defeating behaviours which caused his various careers to crash but his inherited wealth sustained him. He became so unpopular with commercial lenders and financiers that he almost “sank” but friend Putin and his oligarchs came to his rescue which is why he has a “soft spot” for Putin. However now his ultra-narcissism and “anti-social personalty disorder” (per the DSM-5) is being compounded by creeping senile dementia. This is a mid-term election year in the USA so hopefully the Republicans will soon decide to disassociate themselves from Trump to ensure re-election and invoke the 25th Amendment to compulsorily retire Donald Trump from the presidency by reason of the advancing infirmities of advanced age which are clearly afflicting him. What should concern us is Pierre Poilievre’s true relationship to Trump & Co. When Trump invaded Venezuela it was very obviously not to liberate it but to exploit it and Mr PP was ok with that. What’s the real story here dear Pierre?:- do have a secret deal with Trump to assist him in invading Canada by becoming his appointed quisling to rule and exploit Canada on his behalf just as with Delcy Rodríguez in Venezuela? Oh, and how does Cheryl Gallant feel about an invasion and annexation of Canada by the USA?:- however she never takes questions and she’s not saying. However it should be noted that after Mark Carney addressed the WEF he left without listening to Trump’s rant and without even saying “Hello.” to him:- it should be obvious that the World leaders collectively have “turned their backs” on Trump and are shunning him and he seems to be losing his influence globally as a result. Hopefully he will soon be eased out of office by the 25th Amendment and the “morning after” Americans will ask “How did a tramp like Trump ever become the President of the USA?” and hopefully they will take steps to ensure that will never happen again:- beyond all doubt Donald Trump is the worst President in the history of the USA and he will retain that dubious distinction long after he is gone. Tylo moje dwi-grosze wôrtnotë!
Well said Roger. A very good summary of what is happening. Let’s hope the GOP will grow a spine sometime soon.
