Seasonal resident questions lack of festival

Editor’s note: The following letter was sent by a seasonal resident to the Mayor of MV Township and copied to The Current.

To whom it may concern:

When I drove through The Bay to the cottage for the Victoria Day Weekend, I was delighted to notice that the Annual Craft Fair was to be held on July 8.

This event has been, for decades, a highlight of our summer.  The quality of the artisans’ work is high, and it is a rare occasion that both we and our guests do not leave with much lighter wallets.  As well, I know that visitors “from away” often make a special trip to Barry’s Bay for the occasion.  What a shock it was to learn at our Cottagers’ Association meeting that this event had been cancelled.

Why?

I was equally shocked to learn that the South of 60 Arts Centre has been closed.  The historic Railway Station has showcased over the years many talented and imaginative artists in a small enough venue that visitors could analyze the merits of each individual work.  This means too, I fear, that the varied workshops offered at The Centre will disappear.  The South of 60 Art Centre was unique to a small tourist town.  What a shame to lose it.

Again I ask, Why?

I hope you get an answer. This is one of the weekends we look forward to in the summer. The town council does not appear to support the community that voted them in.
