Open mic at the Station

Mushana Schroeder and Jamie Manion

Local musicians performed at an Open Mic session at the Railway Station in Barry’s Bay on Friday August 10. Players of different ages and genres brought their own instruments or took advantage of the sound equipment, guitar and piano that were provided to entertain a small but appreciative audience in the early evening sunshine. Organizer Mushana Schroeder explained that the Township agreed to her suggestion for an Open Mic event. She said Councillor Peplinski offered to bring a guitar and some equipment for people to use, her father helped her bring her stage piano, and she rounded up some players.

The Current managed to catch the second half which included solo performances by Dominic Babinski, Bill Schroeder and Brendan Cybulski. Schroeder’s set included his own composition about small town life as exemplified by Winkler, Manitoba and Barry’s Bay. Cybulski did not bring his fiddle but rather sang and accompanied himself on guitar, playing covers of several country numbers.

Towards the end of the program duets were performed by Mushana Schroeder and Jamie Manion, as well as Councillor Ernie Peplinski with Jenny Peplinski.

Before performing the final set of the evening with his daughter, Peplinski gave credit to Mushana Schroeder for coming up with the idea and for organizing the Open Mic event.

    Totally agree with Bill’s comments.
Just goes to show that if young people are given opportunities and support you can count on them to make great things happen !! Good for you Mushana, and all the others who performed.

Sorry I missed this (it was a little early in the evening) but all the same it was a great idea. Thanks to those who organized and or performed at it. Events like this should be happening daily throughout the summer at the station, perhaps a little more advertising would help increase the crowd (just sayin’).What a great asset the railway station is! Looking forward to the next one! Thanks again for your efforts.
