OPP Killaloe Detachment warns Madawaska Valley residents to be alert about potential telephone scams. The advice follows attendance at a Combermere Road residence last weekend by OPP Constable Ian Morin. Investigation revealed that the complainant had been defrauded of $45,000 through a phone scam called Mega Millions. The caller convinces the victim that he or she has won a big prize and then persuades the victim to send money through bank drafts prior to collecting the “winnings.”

The OPP reminds residents that a legitimate contest will never require winners to send money before picking up prizes. This follows previous recent warnings by the OPP about the “CRA scam” where victims receive threatening phone calls from people pretending to represent the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA). The caller tells the victim that because of unpaid taxes they must send money in order to avoid legal action including seizure of assets, etc.
