The event was well-attended by supporters from the Valley and beyond. A total of six teams competed: last year’s winners The Hudders, along with Lacombes, Ball Gazers, Team Chaos, Recreational Hazards and Snipers. Volunteers with the Wilno Community Rink said the Classic is a very effective fundraiser, because of match fees paid by the teams, donations and refreshment sales. Tournament organizer Con Leahy plays for the Valley Lakers in a broomball league and told The Current that members of other teams in the league offered to come for the day and help support a community rink. One group even drove from east of Ottawa. Wilno Rink volunteers hope the Classic continues to grow.

As with all community events, the Wilno Classic depends on volunteers to make everything run smoothly. Rob Bersan and his volunteers were out on the rink early with snowblower and shovels to prepare the ice surface for play. Joanne Plebon worked the canteen with a number of helpers and Con Leahy sped around the club house giving everything a final check before hitting the ice to celebrate her birthday by playing goal for Team Chaos.
