OPP Killaloe weekly news Mar. 11-17

During the week of March 11 to March 17, 2019 there were 77 calls for service for the Killaloe Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), including the Whitney Detachment.

  • There were four motor vehicle collisions, two were animal related.
  • There were no domestic disputes.

Distracted Driving Campaign Results 

The Killaloe OPP Detachment participated in the week long Distracted Driving Campaign which began on March 11, 2019 and concluded on March 17, 2019. This provincial campaign targeted cellphone use and driving behaviours which distract drivers from driving safely on our roadways. Locally, the Killaloe OPP charged 4 drivers with Using a Handheld Communication Device while driving. Please drive responsibly.

The OPP Highway Division advises that during the province-wide initiative, the OPP laid a total of 1,508 distracted driving charges. Officers laid an additional 51 distraction-related careless driving charges against drivers who were caught dividing their attention between driving and some other activity that made roads unsafe. So far this year, the OPP has laid over 2,000 distracted driving charges.

Assault and mischief charges

On Sunday, March 17, 2019 at approximately 1: 15 a.m. members of the Killaloe OPP Detachment responded to a family dispute at a residence on Pikwakanagan Ontario First Nation, near Golden Lake. As a result of police investigation, Jason DEXTER, 31 years old, of Golden Lake was arrested and charged with Assault and Mischief, contrary to the Criminal Code. The accused was held pending a bail court hearing at the Ontario Court of Justice, Pembroke.

Collision

On Thursday, March 14, 2019 at approximately 3: 20 p.m. members of the Killaloe OPP Detachment responded to a two vehicle collision involving a passenger car and a pickup truck on Corrigan Road, Bonnechere Valley Township. The 61 year old female driver of the passenger car from Bonnechere Valley Township and the 80 year old female driver of the pickup truck from Bonnechere Valley Township were transported to hospital by ambulance with non-life threatening injuries. Both vehicles were towed. No charges were laid.
