Manor residents cheer Catch The Ace winner at cheque presentation

Valley Manor residents and staff gathered in the Fireplace Lounge on June 14 to witness the good fortune of Rachel Stamplicoski, winner of the Catch The Ace lottery. St. Francis Valley Healthcare Foundation (SFVH Foundation) Executive Director, Toni Lavigne-Conway, and Erin Gienow, Donor Relations and Events Coordinator, presented Stamplicoski with a cheque for $24,935.50. Her winning ticket for Week No. 9 of the Catch The Ace lottery caught the Ace of Spades so Stamplicoski won the progressive jackpot as well as 20 percent of that week’s ticket sales. (Seated in front of Manor staff and residents are Charles Stamplicoski (left), Rachel Stamplicoski and Erin Gienow.)

Stamplicoski is well known to everyone at the Manor, having worked there for 39 years. As she received the cheque, there were cheers and applause from residents and staff, followed by hugs from smiling well wishers. CEO Trisha Sammon said it was a very exciting day for everyone at the Manor.

When asked why the lottery is important to the Manor, Stamplicoski said, “Because I have dedicated my life to the Manor. The Manor is my second home.” That’s a good description for someone whose first job was as a Registered Nurse on the ward. She progressed to Director of Nursing and now works as the RAI MDC Co-ordinator. She says her present role is “to do assessment of residents to determine the funding [the Manor] gets.” She knows all the residents and said, “I brought my sons here when they were little to meet them.”

She and her husband, Charles, a retired construction worker, got the phone call from Gienow at their Wilno home after the draw on Thursday afternoon. Knowing the draw was shown live on Facebook, Stamplicoski had to text their three sons right away, who live in Combermere, Eganville and Richmond Hill. The Ace of Spades was found in Envelope #15, which is her youngest son’s “lucky” number. Charles, who was with her at the presentation, agreed his wife was “pretty dedicated to the Manor” and said it was a nice windfall.

Stamplicoski said she felt very excited and nervous to receive the cheque. When asked what she would do with her winnings, Stamplicoski said she “had no idea.” She has bought one ticket every Tuesday morning at the Manor since the lottery began in April.

Lavigne-Conway teased the couple, pointing out to Charles that it was Rachel’s name on the cheque and surely he was planning to treat her this weekend! Lavigne-Conway said it was great that the big win went to someone local, especially somebody who had worked right here at the Manor and was so well-known.

Gienow announced that the main winner is Valley Manor itself. The total amount that the Catch The Ace Lottery contributed towards the Manor Redevelopment is $34,654 so far. Gienow said that SFVH Foundation will re-apply to run another CTA lottery. She said it usually takes about four weeks to get approval, but the team of SFVH Foundation volunteers and CTA vendors are ready and waiting for the next exciting round.
