Blasting at Pecarskie Pit on Monday July 29

Madawaska Valley Township has circulated a notice from Rock Breakers 2007 Inc. that there will be blasting at Pecarskie Pit and Quarry, 417 Paugh Lake Road, Barry’s Bay on Monday July 29 between 8:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. The required safety procedures will be observed and the following air horn or siren signals will be used:

  • Blast imminent: 5 short blasts (1 minute before detonation)
  • Blast signal: 3 short blasts followed by detonation
  • All clear: one long blast

Road and access road traffic may be affected.

 

Improvements to cell and internet service in Eastern Ontario

The Ontario government announced on July 23 that it was spending $315 million to improve internet and cell services in rural and remote communities. Of that sum, it has committed $71 million toward the $213 million Eastern Ontario Regional Network project. Monte McNaughton, Minister of Labour, said, “Families in rural Ontario have waited too long for help getting better broadband. Our government is taking action so families don’t have to drive to fast food restaurants or local libraries to get good wifi.”

 

OPP officer charged after motor vehicle collision

On Friday July 12, 2019 at approximately 2: 20 p.m., OPP Killaloe Detachment responded to a two vehicle collision that occurred on Highway 60 in the Township of Killaloe Hagarty and Richards. The collision involved a passenger vehicle and a marked OPP cruiser. Both vehicles were travelling westbound. Minor injuries were reported to the officer and the 74-year-old driver of the passenger vehicle.

As a result, Provincial Constable Murray MACDOUGALL, a two year member with the Killaloe Detachment, has been charged with Unsafe Move, Lane or Shoulder contrary to the Highway Traffic Act. The officer remains on active duty.

 

Yakabuski accepts MV invitation to view clearcutting

After making the announcement about the Paugh Lake Road rehabilitation project on July 26, John Yakabuski, Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry, accompanied Mayor Kim Love and municipal staff on a site visit to Babinski Road. Doubtless Mayor Love will report on the viewing in due course. As reported by The Current on June 11, MV Council had directed CAO Sue Klatt to write to Yakabuski about the Ministry clearcutting. 125 years of rail in the Valley

Celebrations of rail history in the Valley continue this week with a live reading of Ribbons of Steel by the Opeongo Readers’ Theatre at the Railway Station at 7 p.m. on Thursday August 1. The following day you can enjoy the “All Aboard” lunch for just $10 at the Opeongo Seniors Centre, 19 Stafford Street. Lunch is served between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. with entertainment by Landry and Madill.
