Catch The Ace update

Week #17 winner was Janice Ventura of Ottawa who picked up her ticket on a visit to her mother at Valley Manor. Ventura won $1,813. Her ticket revealed the Queen of Diamonds, so the Ace of Spades remains elusive and the progressive jackpot continues to build. Based on historical ticket sales, the estimated weekly winnings for the draw on Thursday February 6 is $1,685 and if the winning ticket reveals the Ace of Spades, the lucky ticket-holder will take home an estimated $37,094!

Christine Sinclair, Canada’s 36-year-old soccer team captain from Burnaby BC, made soccer history last Wednesday when she scored goals No. 184 and 185 to pass retired American Abby Wambach and become the world’s all-time leading goal-scorer (male OR female). Last June, The Current reported that she was poised to break the record during the Women’s World Cup in France, but instead her record-breaking goals came in Texas when Sinclair was playing in her 290th career game for Canada. Wambach, who retired in 2015, compiled her total in 255 games.

The Canadian Press quoted Sinclair’s comments about being a sporting icon. “It’s not something I really think about,” she said. “I’m just me. I’m private, I’m quiet. I’ll speak up when I need to … Hopefully I’m an example for others, especially like young kids. Show them what’s possible when you dream those crazy dreams and put in the work.

“But most of all, I just try to be a good Canadian day after day.”

Soccer in the Valley

When you tell your kids how a Canadian woman holds the international goal-scoring record in soccer, why not ask them if they would like to learn to play the Beautiful Game? Rosa Corsi-Etmanskie recently posted the question on Facebook, saying that due to low registration, soccer did not run last year in Barry’s Bay. If there is interest in the outdoor soccer program, please let her know as soon as possible – before you know it, spring will be here. She can be reached on Facebook with a private message.

The program is suitable for 3 years and up.
