Song of Bernadette drama this weekend

This weekend the Don Bosco Drama Club from Our Lady Seat of Wisdom College (SWC) presents its annual stage production at Madawaska Valley District High School in Barry’s Bay. The Current offers this sneak preview from The Song of Bernadette, a play that tells the story of St. Bernadette Soubirous and Our Lady of Lourdes. Above Leah Myers (l) as Bernadette’s sister Marie, Gabi Jezierska as Bernadette Soubirous, Olivia Bagshaw as school friend Jeanne Abadie.

As in past productions, SWC draws upon the strengths of the student body. This year, for example, the college’s string ensemble plays during changes of scene on the dimly-lit stage. Based on the dress rehearsal we attended, audiences this weekend will find the play very moving. Some familiar names are involved as Director Marissa Henry draws on her experience of more than seven previous SWC productions. She is ably supported by Assistant Director Maria Henry, Stage Manager Brenna Wehrle and a committed student cast and crew.

Daniel Everett as cleric Dean Peyramale with Bernadette at school
Maria Anastasia Corkery (second from right) scolds Bernadette as neighbours watch
Viktor Lemke (l) and Nicholas Craley, Mayor and Police Chief, debate
Bernadette (Gabi Jezierska) undergoes police questioning

Cast members wait in wings

Performances take place February 7 and 8 at 7:00 p.m. and at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday February 9. Tickets are available at SWC, Lorraine’s Pharmasave or by calling 613.756.3082. There may be limited tickets available at the door.
